Abstract :
The deepest place on the earth, Challenger Deep, is 10,916 m beneath the sea surface. This undersea feature is larger than the highest mountain on land. By Dec. 12, 1972, the Apollo 17 (the last moonwalk mission), there were altogether 12 astronauts ever visited the moon and came back to our Blue Planet, the earth. Surprisingly, in the same era, there were only two adventurers ever reached the bottom and explored for 20 minutes only. Till today, we know much better about the terrains on the dark side of the moon than the bathymetry around Taiwan in terms of resolution and accuracy. Why these two unknown worlds seem to pose difficulties off by one order in scale is the theme of this presentation. Several factors will be discussed from the engineering perspectives to illustrate this phenomenon. The potential of underwater technology and the blue sea market associated with it are summarized as the closing remarks.
