Abstract:
The “Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell is the most renowned archetype for personal growth. It observes that individuals across all cultures and eras must undertake figurative (or literal) journeys out of their comfort zone to obtain self-actualized adulthood (i.e. the goal of any education system). While the concept originated from mythology, we believe that space missions and the New Space economy are real manifestations of epic journeys in the 21st century- and are, thus, the harbinger of growths.
Here for the first time in the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Taiwan, three teams with 15 students undertook the challenge to journey from zero rocketry experience in Spring 2021 to the launch of three 6000N-s impulse, 20kg, 3meters tall rockets in Fall 2021. This was followed by the onwards journey to represent the school in Spaceport America Cup 2022: an annual competition in New Mexico attended by 1000+ participants and 150 universities from all continents and regions.
This presentation showcases each stage of this long journey, supported by NYCU’s mechanical engineering department, ASARe Lab, ARRC, and buoyed by the students’ passion to grow beyond themselves through rocketry and space.
