Title: Innovation in interventional cardiology —transforming clinical needs into viable inventions

Abstract:
The evolution of modern interventional cardiology began over 40 years ago. Use of the same diagnostic imaging tools that had revolutionized the practice of medicine became a possibility in guiding real-time treatment of disease. This concept led to rapid treatment advances in cardiovascular system of the body. It became clear that by utilizing imaging some patients could undergo targeted minimally invasive procedures, thus avoiding major surgery, while others could undergo procedures for previously unsolvable problems.
Innovation in interventional radiology typically occurs when someone either takes existing tools or develops new ones to solve a clinical problem. Either way, creativity is the common thread. Interventional cardiology innovators have created better and safer ways to treat disease. After initial discovery, superior tools are then developed that allow procedures to become safer and more durable. Finally the new procedure is compared with existing techniques by using clinical, financial, and safety metrics, allowing its role in patient care to become clearly defined. The cycle then repeats and new discoveries are made based on prior accepted procedures.
This natural ebb and flow form discovery to enhancement and then back to discovery provides the foundation for all image-guided medicine today. The end result is the enormous scope of practice that interventional cardiologists have crafted over the past 40 years. The breadth of these changes now encompasses all of medicine and has forever changed the way we think about disease.
In this brief review, the major technologic advances in the field will be described and the 40-year journey of interventional cardiologists from diagnostic imagers to practicing clinicians will be explored.
Biography:
Dr. Yin is Vice Superintendent of the Cheng-Hsin General Hospital and Professor of Medicine at the National Yang-Ming University, Taipei, Taiwan. He is also the Current President of the Taiwan Society of Cardiovascular Interventions.
After receiving a MD degree from the National Defense Medical Center, Dr. Yin trained in internal medicine and cardiology at Taipei Veterans General Hospital and obtained his PhD degree at the National Yang-Ming University. Dr. Yin is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and the College of Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology (FAPSC).
He is a well-known interventional cardiologist and a frequently invited faculty member of interventional conferences, such as TCT (USA), ESC, EuroPCR, London Valves (Europe), CCT, Tokyo Valves (Japan), CIT, OCC, CHC, GWICC, Chengdu Valves (China), TCT-AP, AP Valves, ENCORE (Korea), AsiaPCR (Singapore), CSI-NIC (India), etc.
Currently he actively engages in transcatheter heart valve interventions and serves as a proctor of Medtronic, Boston Scientific, and Edwards TAVR devices. He has more than 700 case experiences on transcatheter heart valve interventions, including TAVR, aortic and mitral valve-in-valve, MitraClip, and repair of paravalvular leakages, by 2021.
Dr. Yin has led the nationwide registries on heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and on treatment of diabetic patients with acute coronary syndrome of the Taiwan Society of Cardiology (the TSOC-HFrEF registry and the TSOC ACS-DM registry) and has participated in many international clinical trials such as HOKUSAI-VTE (national PI), ROCKET-AF, ASEND-HF, ENTRUST AF-PCI, DEFINITION-II, etc. He has published widely in the Circulation Cardiovascular Interventions, Circulation Image, JACC Cardiovascular Interventions, Journal of the American Heart Association, International Journal of Cardiology, etc. He is also reviewers of the JACC Cardiovascular Interventions, American Journal of Cardiology, etc.
