Abstract:

In recent years, plasma assisted flow control has been extensively studied in many laboratories worldwide. Two commonly used are alternating current dielectric barrier discharge (AC-DBD) and nanosecond driven (ND-DBD) plasma actuators. The control mechanism of AC-DBD is the formation of a low-speed near-wall jet, due to the interaction between the charged species in the plasma and neutral particles near the surface, typically a few meters per second. While the mechanism associated with the NS-DBD plasma actuator is high amplitude thermal perturbations through Joule heating. This talk will discuss details of these two types of plasma actuators applied to flow separation control over an airfoil at Reynolds numbers up to a half million, with force and time-resolved PIV measurements. Pros and cons of these plasma actuators are addressed. In addition, this talk will also discuss some applications of plasma actuators to supersonic flow, such as plasma synthetic jet and plasma arcing actuators.
