Title: Pressure Balance and Mass Transfer at the Two-Phase Parallel Flow
Date: 2021/04/15 (Thursday) 3:30 pm – 5:20pm
Location: Engineering 5 Building B1 International Conference Hall

Monitoring mass transfer and kinetics at liquid-liquid extractor to ensure optimal continuous processing is essential. However, the precise residence time control and clear interface are not applicable for most segmented flow extractors. I will review our understanding of the current challenge based on hydrodynamic, continuous processing, and manufacturing points. Further, I'll present a novel core-annular liquid-liquid extractor for a two-phase system as a robust screening tool in process development. The extractor has high interface stability, a large contact surface area and high flexibility in flow rate control between the aqueous and organic phase. The clearly defined residence time in the presented extractor allows the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient to be estimated for further scale-up and process optimization.
Dr. Ya-Yu Chiang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Chung – Hsing University in Taiwan. Before two postdoctoral years in University College London (UCL), she obtained her doctor’s degree from the Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, Technische Universität Dortmund (Germany). Her current research interests are fluidic manipulation, biomimicry, and multiphase mass transfer and mechanic. She develops microfluidic devices for high efficiency single cell capture, sorting and in-situ monitoring. She also develops multiphase flow micro-reactors for rapid continuous processing, and studies the chemical reaction and mass transfer panama at fluid interfaces.
